Understanding the Context of Education
Short, sourced primers on the professional knowledge of education: what schools are for, how people learn and are taught, how curricula and assessments are made, how systems decide, and how the field knows and changes. Each corrects a common belief, maps the field and sets out the debates that are still open.
Why the series exists
Much of what goes wrong in education was known in advance
Reforms stall for reasons historians have described for a century. New tools repeat promises made for film and radio. Measures crowd out the aims they were meant to serve, and interventions that worked in one setting fail in the next. Most of this is documented. It sits in fields that people who come to education from elsewhere, and many who work inside it, never had time to read.
This series gathers that knowledge into short primers. It starts with what education is for and moves outward: how people learn and are taught, where learning happens, what is taught and judged, how schools and systems decide, and how the field knows things and changes.
Correct a belief
Each primer opens with a belief that sounds reasonable and is widely held, and shows what the evidence says instead.
Map the field
One central idea, one map and a working vocabulary, then five key ideas, each with its reasoning, a figure and the evidence behind it.
Show what is still argued
The live debates get the strongest case on each side, followed by what the ideas change for anyone who designs, teaches, leads, decides or builds.

The primers assume no training in education. They are written to be useful to a first-year teacher and still worth an experienced leader's time, because each one gathers the evidence and the arguments in one place and says plainly where they are thin.

01Organise from purpose outward
Decision
The primers run in six parts: purposes, teaching and learning, learning environments, curriculum and assessment, schools and systems, and evidence and change.
Why
Each part rests on the one before it. Aims shape teaching, teaching happens somewhere, and the curriculum, the system and the research all serve or constrain those choices.
Trade-off
Some topics belong to more than one part. Equity, for example, shapes learners, classrooms and funding, so primers point to each other rather than repeat.
02Write for anyone who works in or on education
Decision
The primers assume no training in education and address no single profession. There are no role-by-role sections.
Why
The same knowledge is missing in different places: a new teacher may lack the policy view, a policy officer the classroom view, and a designer both. One text that serves them all is easier to keep right.
Trade-off
Practical sections speak to anyone who designs, teaches, leads, decides or builds, so a reader in a specific role has to make the last translation.
03Five ideas per primer, not five habits
Decision
Each primer sets out five key ideas, each with its reasoning, a figure, the evidence, and the readings that hold up against the readings that mislead.
Why
The craft series teaches practice. This series builds judgement, which depends on understanding ideas well enough to apply them to new cases.
Trade-off
Ideas are harder to act on than habits, so each primer closes with a practical section and a list of questions to ask.
04Give the live debates their own section
Decision
Section eight of every primer sets out two or three debates, with the strongest case on each side and a note on what evidence can and cannot settle.
Why
Much of education is contested for good reasons: values differ, and the evidence is often thin or context-bound. Readers need to know where the ground is disputed before they build on it.
Trade-off
Presenting both sides fairly takes space, and some readers want a verdict the evidence cannot give.
05One home for every term
Decision
A term inventory of about 900 concepts, models and debates assigns each term to one primer. Other primers mention it and point to that home.
Why
Nothing is defined twice or differently, and gaps are visible before writing starts. The inventory was checked against the research literature, which added four primers and a part on learning environments.
Trade-off
Readers sometimes have to follow a pointer to get a full definition.
06Leave cognition and learning myths to existing guides
Decision
How memory and attention work stays in the Designing for Learning primer, and practices with weak evidence stay in the False Certainties field guide.
Why
Both are already written and checked. Repeating them would create two versions to maintain.
Trade-off
The learners primer is shorter on cognition than a reader might expect, and points elsewhere for it.
07A quieter material than the craft series
Decision
Grounds are low-chroma stone tints, one hue family per part, and spines carry a double band and a dotted edge. The engine, views and print paths are the same as the craft series.
Why
The craft series already uses the full colour wheel, so the context series is identified by chroma and a mark rather than by hue. Readers can tell the two shelves apart, even in greyscale.
Trade-off
Neighbouring primers within a part look alike. The part is the unit of identity, and the number tells volumes apart.
08Singapore as a worked case, on the public record
Decision
Each primer carries a Singapore appendix built from published ministry and parliamentary sources, with anything that may have changed marked for checking.
Why
A concrete system makes abstract ideas testable, and Singapore is the system most readers will work in. Public sources keep the primers safe to share.
Trade-off
Policy moves faster than the primers are revised, so the appendix dates its sources.

Organised by the life of a learning product, from why build it to whether it lasts. Each guide corrects a misconception, teaches five habits and shows where the practice breaks in education.
Read the introductionUnderstanding the Context of Education
Organised from the purposes of education outward. Written for a general reader, it supplies the knowledge the craft guides assume: aims, learners, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, policy, research and reform.
The two sets can be read together. Craft guide 14, on data strategy, reads differently once assessment systems (C14) has shown why any reported measure becomes a target. Craft guide 19, on adoption, is sharper after education reform (C23) has explained why system change is slow.
The evidence standard
Every claim is checked before it is used
Before drafting
Each primer starts from a claims register: every number, quotation, date and citation, checked at source before drafting. Claims that cannot be verified are dropped or marked as unverified in the text. Quotations reached only through secondary sources are marked as such, and invented examples are labelled as illustrative.
Inside every primer
Contested findings are shown as contested, with the counter-evidence beside them. The written primers already carry examples: a famous 1913 prediction about film that was in fact made in 1922, a widely repeated claim that teachers make 1,500 decisions a day that traces to no study, and a classroom-design finding that explains 16% of the variation in progress rather than raising progress by 16%. Each primer's evidence appendix records what is strong, what is contested and what was set aside.
